CHARLOTTE: Sophia was diagnosed with lupus about 2 years ago. We started noticing her symptoms when she was about 8 years old, but it was hard to tell what was going on. Kids get sick all the time, so fever or asking to stay home from school didn’t worry me so much in the beginning.

SOPHIA: But then I got those rashes – so that’s when we started going to see different doctors.

CHARLOTTE: We saw a number of specialists. We focused on the rash at first. Then I mentioned to the pediatrician that Sophia had a fever over the weekend. She asked how often that was happening and what else we were noticing. And that’s when she recommended we see a pediatric rheumatologist.

SOPHIA: It was really scary seeing all those different doctors. I mean, no one knew what was wrong with me. And I just wanted to get back to playing soccer or hanging out with my friends.
